When you’re in the market for a new car, there’s no resource with more credibility and experience than Consumer Reports. The organization has been around since 1936, and is highly trusted for its reviews. They’ll help you pick the best cars on the market and note the relative strengths and weaknesses of each to make the best decision possible. On the other side of the coin, some cars are rated so poorly that Consumer Reports advises against a purchase if at all possible. For a good example, let’s take a quick look at their four lowest-rated cars at the end of 2015.
First, is the Toyota Yaris - a subcompact priced to be affordable. However, the engine is fairly weak, and the positioning of the driver is not very comfortable. The manual transmission also offers fewer gears than is standard.
Next, is the Scion tC, a model that is geared towards being sporty but has its issues. The steering wheel is too far away from even larger drivers. The interior is very noisy while driving, and the steering is too stiff to handle turns well.
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV may look like a great electric car, but it can’t go very far without needing another charge (which takes six hours). Their Mirage also got low marks; despite its attractive low price point, it feels very cheap because of its small size and overall poor driving experience.
Luckily, if you are in the market for a new car, Consumer Reports has positive reviews for quality models you can explore. But it’s certainly advisable to avoid these worst offenders entirely.
